联开环球 http://www.lingok.com/blog/ 联开环球 Oblog 3.0 user@lingok.com <![CDATA[谈谈英汉词典中新词的译名]]> http://www.lingok.com/blog/user1/柔软阳光/archives/2008/2081.html 柔软阳光 2008-7-10 17:11:30 　　汉语中的外来语大多来自英语。为英语新词找出妥帖的汉语对应不是一件容易的事。原因在于，许多新词所表达的概念在汉语中无对应物，更无对应词可寻。因此，要求翻译者把新概念和新词语同时介绍过来，其难度可想而知。新词翻译虽难，但又是人人可为的事情，仁者见仁，智者见智，洋出来的名称难免五花八门；如PIZZA一词，民众称之'比萨饼'，词典家译作'皮条饼'，商家名之为'必胜客'。又如VIDEO CD，港台称“影碟”，大陆厂家称“视盘”，而口语中更多听到的则是VCD。同一外来词拥有三个汉语译名的算不得稀奇，cellular telephone就有雅俗优劣但不相间的六个译名：移动电话、无绳电话。大哥大、手机、携带式活动电话、蜂窝式电话。

　　译名太多无疑会造成语言的混乱，但语言有其自身的规律——优胜劣汰。优秀的译名经广泛传播会在语言中存活下来，而劣质译名大多行之不远。当然这也不是绝对的。就拿“大哥大”这个译名来说，从字面意义上来看，与cellular phone毫无关系，而且”出身“也不好，但因为这种通讯工具出现时尚未出现更好的译名，使得这个'出身不好'的名称流行多年。不过随着“移动电话”和“手机”一文一白两个名称的出现，“大哥大”最终将退出历史舞台。又如taxi，有“出租车”、“计程车”和“的士”等名称。有文字专家认为，“出租车”容易与“不提供司机的出租汽车”相混淆，“的土”是粤语方言对taxi的蹩脚音译，而“计程车”则是语义贴切的佳译。但在现实语言交际中，“出租车”是正式名称。“计程车”始终未能远播，是方言词，“的士”不仅自身在口语比中十分流行，还衍生出“打的”、“面的”。“摩的”、“板的”'、“的哥儿”等词汇。“的”字俨然成为多产的构词语素。

　　由于词典在读者心目中具有至高无上的权威地位，在译名从无到有以及优胜劣汰的过程中，词典编纂者理应起到积极的作用--或创造出优良的译名，或把好的译名收入词典。

　　国内学者对新词词典中的词目翻译问题存在一定分歧，一些学者对创造新的对应词持谨慎态度，认为对于文化局限词，外汉词典的编纂者的首要任务是要将它们解释清楚，其次再考虑给它们创造一些新词。但如果理据不足应该作罢，否则有损汉语的规范性。另一种观点从双语词典的性质出发，认为双语词典编者的任务之一是促成“不可译性”向“可译性”的转变，即通过各种办法，为“不可译”词语提供容易被大众接受的译文。从而促进两种文化的交流。朱原先生也认为在外汉词典中，词书编纂者对于新词的译法可以有较大的自由，在某些词语的译法上不从俗应该是允许的。如果同时用括注的方式说明某些流行译法之不妥，也会是很有益的。

　　普遍英汉词典和英汉新词词典中的译名经常受到词典工作者甚至普遍读者的批评。它们通常存在以下几种问题（文内以下例子均取自《英语新词语词典》、《英语新词词典》，《现代英汉综合大辞典》和《英汉人辞典》）：1、译名太长，或者用解释性句子充当译名，如． 1)Cobra n. 攻击地面力量的双人直升飞机. ２)collocate vb.出于防御目的而强迫平民居于军事目标附近３)domain a. 电脑邮件@符号右边的地址

　　第一个词目应首先给出译名“眼镜蛇直升飞机”，再作括注说明。后两例也应先有译名“军民混居”和“域名”。

　　2、译名不合汉语习惯成语体、词性、词义范围等配译失当, 如: 1)doggie-bag 狗食袋 2)Grunge n. 一种摇滚形式 3） disk drive n．软盘驱动器 4）Command n．命令、指令，开动某一装置

　　除《英汉新词语词典》未收 doggie-bag外，另三本词典均译成'狗食袋'。 doggie-bag指餐馆将剩菜给顾客打包带回用的袋子，带回的食物未必喂狗。doggie(小狗)在英语国家的人眼里也是十分可爱的形象，译名“狗食袋”似太粗俗。建设性的提议是译成“打包袋”。第二例既无译名，释义也太不清楚，若以此类推，“狗”和“猫”都可译成“一种动物”，编纂词典未免太容易。第三例 disk drive应译成“磁盘驱动器”，它包括软盘驱动器和硬盘驱动器两种。第四例的译名让读者很难理解成名词。

　　3．与社会通用名或专业术语不符，如：1）blading n．冰刀溜冰（通用名：滚轴溜冰，轮滑） 2）hit parade n．风行曲目集锦（通用名：排行榜） 3） click n．＆vb.．按鼠标上的按钮（术语：点击）

　　钱厚生先生在《双语词典释义原则与问题》一文中说：“为了提高双语词典释义的准确性、适用性和规范性，编者应当重视词语翻译实例的收集。无论从理论上还是从实践上看，双语词典的释义都应基于大量具有典型意义的译例。”这段话虽然是针对普通双语词典来说的，但对于新词词典的编纂也有指导意义。如果编者不顾语言中已经确立下来的译名而盲目乱译，只会贻笑大方。

　　4．对一些新词在尚未搞清真实含义的情况下，应避免匆匆给译名，以免以讹传讹。如有一本词典把gradeflation“（学校中的）分数贬值”误译成“等级膨胀”；把execu－crime“白领犯罪”误译成“行政犯罪”，go flatline一词指的是“脑电图变成水平线”，婉指“死亡”，而某词典中误译成“失去表示主要身体功能的波浪方式的”，动词词组译成了形容词，释义也令人费解。

　　由上面例子可见，英汉词典编纂者所给的译名存在的一个首要问题是以解释或定义充当译名，过长而不易上口。另外，对汉语词汇收集研究不足也是一个很大的问题。有鉴于此，编者在选择译名时似应注意。

　　1．汉语中已有对应名称的新词，尤其是专业术语，一般不应再杜撰新名，如：anti-lock brake system 防抱死制动系统（某词典中杜撰作'防车轮卡住[啮合]打滑制动系统'）；bungie jumping蹦极跳（某词典中杜撰作“自由落式松紧束跳高”）； barrier crash 障壁试验（某词典中杜撰作“试验性碰撞”）

　　2．英语或汉语中有多个符合表达同一概念的，应尽量选择最佳的一个，以便统一汉语译名，如 information superhighway（信息高速公路）一词，由于它本身在英语中的译名尚不统一，有information highway，infobahn，electric superhighway，data highway，I－way，information super-wormhole，info pike，info superpike，electronic convocations highway等多种说法，翻译中还是统一为好，不应像有的词典那样再增加“电子超高速公路”、“电子通讯高速公路”等译名。

　　3．对于汉语中尚无对应词的英语新词，应在深人理解原词的基础上，尽量创造出符合汉语习惯的对应语，如：

　　boomerang baby n．还巢儿（有词典译作“回归家庭的子女”）

　　Squeegee man n．抹车仔（有词典译作“用橡皮刷帚清洗挡风玻璃的小伙子”）

　　back-to-back n．双往返机票（有词典译作“两张减价的双程机票”）

　　如果编者创造的译名有独到之处，是完全可能被读者接受的。

]]> <![CDATA[沟通文化差异，巧妙对译汉英习语]]> http://www.lingok.com/blog/user1/柔软阳光/archives/2008/2078.html 柔软阳光 2008-7-10 16:57:42 　　任何一种语言，都有自己长期积淀下来的通俗而生动形象地描绘人情世态的定型短语或短句，英语里称为“习语”，汉语里则称为“熟语”，为了称说的方便，本文采用“习语”的说法。

　　习语是老百姓长期使用而固定下来的说法，因此它带有强烈的民族色彩和鲜明的文化内涵，是民族文化的积淀，这就要求在翻译的时候，不能仅仅停留在文字的表面，而要搞清楚习语的深层含义，沟通两种语言的文化差异，巧妙互译，才能不失习语的原有韵味。

　　先看英语习语的汉译，如：a piece of cake.

　　这个习语充分反映了西方人的生活习俗，对他们来说，蛋糕是极其平常的食物，无论是做蛋糕还是吃蛋糕都是轻松愉快的小事一桩。对我们来说，蛋糕似乎是奢侈品，吃蛋糕是高兴的事，做就没那么容易了，但汉语里恰巧有一个反映我们汉人生活习俗的俗语“小菜一碟”，其功能与“a piece of cake”大致相当，因此，用“小菜一碟”对译“a piece of cake”，可以说既传“义”，又传“情”，较好地保留了语言的原有韵味。

　　再如：under one’s nose.

　　西方人的“大鼻子”给我们的印象非常深刻，可能西方人自己也知道这一点，因此他们用“under one’s nose”表达“就在某人面前，当着某人的面”的意思，如果我们直译为“在某人鼻子底下”，就不符合汉语习俗，不够“味”，但我们有“在某人眼皮底下”这个俗语，因为在我们看来，眼皮底下的“眼睛”是洞悉一切的，所以说用“在某人眼皮底下”对译“under one’s nose”比较合适。

　　又如：set a fox to keep one’s geese.

　　在西方文化中，狡猾的狐狸是专门要偷吃鹅的，倘若把鹅交给狐狸去看管，岂不是送羊入虎口，自找祸患，我们汉语里没有这样的认识，如果硬译为“让狐狸看鹅”大家就会觉得莫名其妙，但汉语里有一个接近的习语“引狼入室”，它表达的意思是“自己把坏人引进内部”，恰巧与“set a fox to keep one’s geese”意思对等，如此对译，极为传神。

　　英译汉要传神，汉译英同样要保留原有的韵味。

　　如：狗改不了吃屎。

　　汉语用它来比喻“恶习难改，本性难移”，但狗在西方人的眼中是“人类的朋友”，对狗也宠爱有加，岂能用心爱的狗去表达这样一个不好的意思，因此翻译为英语最好译作“a fox may turn gray,but never kind”，因为“fox”在西方人的观念中，大部分场合不是好东西。

　　再如：有钱能使鬼推磨。

　　它是我们汉语里非常形象的一句俗语，比喻一个人有了钱连鬼都听他使唤，英语译作“money makes the mare go”，基本上保留了原来的韵味，但如果翻译为“all things are obedient to money”，意思虽然也还是“金钱支配一切”、“金钱是万能的”等等，但韵味不够，未能传神。

　　要指出的是，对译的前提条件是两者的意义、文化内涵要相同、相通，不能似是而非，如把“armed to the teeth”翻译为“全副武装”，看起来好象差不多，实际上意义程度不够，语气也嫌太弱，似是而非。

　　再如把“赶鸭子上架”译作“make sb. do sth. entirely beyond him”，意思虽然是对了，但太直白，原来的生动形象性丧失殆尽。

　　当然，也有的时候，翻译为了追求韵味而意思不对那就更要不得了，如把“It is an ill bird that fouls its own nest(恶鸟不渎巢)”译作“家丑不可外扬”就不妥当，不能为了韵味而驴唇不对马嘴，因为翻译“信”是基础，“雅”是升华，不能为了片面追求“雅”而违背“信”，那是以辞害义。

　　总之，翻译是很难的事，而习语的翻译更是难中之难，要想把习语翻译得既准确又传神就需要我们沟通中西方文化差异，尽量保持原文的“丰姿”。

　　咳咳……不好意思哈，说的有点过了～

　　实际情况是这样的。相信大家都知道，雅思口语的四个评分标准为：Fluency and Coherence(流畅与连贯)；Lexical Resource(词汇资源)；Grammatical Range and Accuracy(语法掌握量与运用准确性)and Pronunciation (发音). 具体地说，口语考官在评分的时候，会对每项评分标准都打一个分数，然后最后的分数是他给的分数的平均值。

　　但是今年8月，口语考试评分细则将发生变化，在发音这个标准上更加细化。貌似是对考生的语音语调要求更加严格，于是就有学生手绢儿都没拿就跑来哭诉说是死活报不上7月底的场次……浪费了N张纸巾的同时可怜兮兮的问我：Lyn，我还有希望么？

　　咳咳……亲爱的，擦下鼻涕清醒点，这是雅思考试，它又不是中国足球！！

　　其实关于这个问题，我之前还和Dave聊过，他是我们圣约翰特聘现任雅思考官，也是我朋友，他说起这个倒还蛮开心的。因为之前的话，口语前三项评分可以选择0-9分，而针对Pronunciation 只能选择双数(2、4、6、8)。这次的评分标准的变化是：从8月份开始，考官在给考生的Pronunciation 打分时，也是按照0-9的评分标准的。所以，这次变化带来的结果是——Dave很高兴，情况却也不严重。之前他给中国学生的发音打分多是4或6(只要会吱声，分得出元音辅音就有4，松口气吧～)，6分的情况是重音清晰，有升降语调就OK。虽然有些人认为此次调整对备考影响不大，但对考生的考分还是可能会有直接影响。比如说，如果按照老的评分标准的话，有的考生的发音明显要好于6分，但不足以到8分，这时考官可能会给6分，但在新评分标准下，考官可给7分；但同样，原来略低于6分但明显好于4分考生可能在旧的评分体系中能获得6分，按新标准可能只有5分。一般而言，我们中国考生从6分滑落到5分的比从6分升至7分的要多，因此在新的评分标准下，更多同学的口语分数会有所下降，而不是上升。

　　所以，按照Dave的说法就是：“可喜可贺！我至少可以不用郁闷的给出3.5(F)、3.5(V)、3(G)、6(P)这样的分数了，我可以给5分(P)了！哇哈哈～～”这是原话，就是这样。只是他也不轻松就是了，还要专门为了这次调整去重新审核更新他的考官资格。

　　当然，如果是准备参加8月份之后雅思考试的，又如果比较不踏实发音的同学，从现在开始一定要系统地训练语音语调的各个环节了，祝好运哈，各位！

高兴：外交官.翻译家.诗人

    两年前他打电话来向我约稿，他自报家门，说他是《世界文学》杂志社的，他叫高兴。我订阅《世界文学》已经多年，所以我知道这个名字，知道他是这本著名杂志的副主编，是一个在文学圈里很有名气的翻译家。他的嗓音悦耳，语气儒雅，让我感到愉快。他告诉我说，《世界文学》有一个“中国作家谈世界文学”的栏目，希望我能写一篇这样的文章。我当即就愉快地答应了。一是他的态度让我感到非常舒适，二来呢，《世界文学》向来是我敬重的一本刊物。第三个原因也许才是更为重要的，那就是，我最早对文学产生兴趣，就是因为外国文学。上世纪80年代初，我因为波特莱尔，因为洛尔伽，因为金斯堡，从而喜爱上了诗歌。后来，卡夫卡、普鲁斯特、加缪、萨特、马尔克斯、纳博科夫和博尔赫斯，又让我乐此不疲地走进了小说的迷宫。对于我们这一代作家来说，我并不讳言我们是喝“狼奶”长大的，外国文学引导我们走进文学的世界，也成为我们重要的精神资源。对此，我不仅有话可说，并且非常乐意通过回忆和梳理来进行一次快乐的精神之旅。

    我没有想到，这个高兴，竟然是吴江人。我更没有想到的是，他竟然是我妻子中学时的同班同学！世界上的巧事真是不少，并且时时不经意地在我们身边发生。

    因为高兴是高兴的一个笔名，所以我的妻子没有及时发现她旧日的同窗竟然因为文学的关系，突然与她的丈夫发生了联系。而高兴也没有想到的是，他差不多已经忘记了模样的中学女同学，竟然嫁给了一个小说家，并且在遥远的某一天，他将一个约稿电话打入了她的家中。

    高兴在进入《世界文学》工作之前，曾经是一名外交官，他是中国驻布加勒斯特总领事。说起在罗马尼亚的生活，他总是眉飞色舞。对于罗马尼亚，我的了解非常有限，只是少年时代看电影《多瑙河之波》获得的印象。那宽阔而绵长的河流，勇敢的人民，还有甲板上那对恋人热烈的拥抱和浪漫的接吻。后来，我对于罗马尼亚更多的了解是因为高兴。我从他嘴里知道，罗马尼亚人对中国人至今还是那么友好，将中国人视为朋友和兄弟。那里的姑娘，又是多么漂亮，那么热情奔放，对中国客人好得会让人误以为也许可以发生一些什么浪漫的事。高兴在罗马尼亚的那几年，领事馆就在一个大海边，他天天工作之余，就和他的爱人一起在沙滩上散步，看不够碧海蓝天金沙白浪的美丽风景。

    直到他回国，进入中国社科院《世界文学》杂志社工作之后，还经常率领中国作家代表团出访罗马尼亚。他是一个罗马尼亚通，不光熟悉那儿的风俗地理，还和那里许多的作家诗人是非常好的朋友。中国作家到罗马尼亚，因为有了高兴，不仅语言上不再有障碍，文化上的、文学上的、精神上的交流，也变得那么通畅。每次带中国作家去罗马尼亚，高兴都非常高兴，就像带着朋友走访他的家乡一样。我想是的，那个位于巴尔干半岛的美丽国度，就是高兴的第二故乡。不要说在罗马尼亚工作的经历对高兴自己来说是如何的难忘，就是旁人看来，这也是幸运、美好而值得回味一辈子的。

    当然高兴对他真正的故乡，更是充满了深情。我在他的博客上，读到了许多他怀念故乡的文章。故乡吴江的小街小桥，下雨天，纸做的伞，庭院里的一张竹榻，故乡的老酒，儿时的游戏，还有母亲做的可口的饭菜。他回忆这些的时候，就像是身处一个遥远的国度，就像是进入了老境，悠远的，却满含深情，仿佛这一切都已经不再。

    其实生活在北京，想要回一趟故乡，也不是什么难事。事实上，高兴也经常回来。几个月前他带着林希、刘恪等几位作家回到故乡。他这次回来，作家和编辑的身份完全淡化，他更是以归乡游子的面目现身。他昔日的同学们，用热情将他包围。而我，只是以他中学同学“家属”的身份出现。他旧日的同学，在吴江在苏州，似乎也都事业有成，有银行家，有报社的老总，有机关的领导。当然这时候，大家什么身份都搁置于一边了，大家都只是高兴的同学。他们说着，笑着，回忆着往事。在沸腾的欢乐之中，我想，要是时光倒退，他们在瞬间返回中学时代，他们，包括高兴自己在内，都不会想到在他们中间，将出现一名外交官吧。

    在我的印象里，外交官的形象，应该是儒雅的、智慧的、博学的、经常风度翩翩地出入于上流社会的沙龙中的。高兴正是这样一个人。除此之外，他更是精通于文学的。他翻译了大量的西方现代诗歌，当然重点是罗马尼亚诗歌。他还对许多外国作家有深入的研究。他写的《米兰·昆德拉传》，是我近年读到的最好的一本传记。不光是因为内容详实，更在于他在著述中始终饱含着诗意与激情，对昆德拉神秘的人生和激进的写作进行了非常丰富的描述。特别难能可贵的是，在这本书里，他没有对传主一味地溢美。他敏锐的文学眼光，非常清楚地看到了昆德拉自己生命中的“不能承受之轻”，并不为尊者讳，令我深为折服。

    高兴同时还是一位唯美的诗人。我特别喜欢他一首名为《纪念》的诗中的这么一段:就连目光也有了活力/洞穿雕琢/让花变成花开/让水变成水流/让鸟的翅膀/变成地上的舞蹈。

    外交官、翻译家、诗人，这样一位同乡人，是常常令我感到骄傲和温暖的。

    高兴，江苏吴江人，1979年进入北京外国语大学学习罗马尼亚语和英语，1987年进入中国社会科学院外国文学研究所《世界文学》编辑部工作。工作之余，从事翻译和写作。发表《凡高》、《黛西·米勒》等译著一百多万字以及数百首译诗。

    荆歌，江苏苏州人，江苏省作协专业作家。上世纪80年代中期开始文学创作，迄今已发表长、中、短篇小说200余万字；主要作品有长篇小说《漂移》、《粉尘》、《枪毙》、《鸟巢》等。
